Applesauce Pancakes

by Dennis M. Myers, 10/1/2019

Today is the day my short story is officially available in the 2019 Writers Co-op Anthology, Rabbit Hole, Volume 2. If you read the story, you might be interested in the link down below. It's a nuclear blast zone map that, once you locate Albion, you'll see what those folks are facing.

I first wrote the story as a character study for someone I am bringing into the third book of my Automated Empire series. I wanted to get to know the world she lives in, so I focused on her folks, when they are having a bit of bad luck. The story itself is sad and strange. I set it near where I grew up, so the people and the places are very familiar to me. Minnesota winters are the one thing I don't miss about that place. Summers are beautiful. I highly recommend it. But if you want to do winter, the best way is to show up in October, and ease your way into it.

Then there's the recipe. When's the last time you read a short story that ended with a recipe for something? Yes, you can make your own post-apocalyptic Applesauce Pancakes. And you can thank my editor for that. She spent an afternoon working it out from the limited ingredients I let her use. I would have done it myself, but that much sugar would have put me in a coma, because yes, I would have eaten them. Having the actual recipe worked out, and having the knowledge of how thick the batter is let me know to alter the story just that little bit, so that it's a true representation of what it would be like to make them.

I would have made a killbot and tested that out, but my wife said I couldn't. Still, it would have been nice to be as real as possible. Now if I can just get my jump drive to work, I can start work on a scale model of my ship, the Pang Yu. No, sorry, the Pang Yu isn't in this story, but I assure you, she's up in orbit during these events.
